| The Butler County Sheriff's Office Training and Standards Division operates under the supervision of a Captain who is the Training Commander. Other officers assigned to this division typically work as Training Coordinators. The Training and Standards Division also maintains and monitors departmental training instructors who work on behalf of the division when formally instructing staff. This division is responsible for a wide variety of duties. The primary function is in coordinating, reporting, and documenting all departmental training ranging from firearms to any form of In-Service training no less than 40 hours per year for each full-time certified officer. This includes maintaining several training programs for approximately 120 officers working within the two primary divisions of the department, the Enforcement Division and the Detention Division. The Training Commander and staff ensure that officers receive training to keep them both proficient and updated with current legislation and procedures. The Training Commander works as well to assist the department in compliance with all certification related issues concerning the Kansas Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (KsCPOST). The Training and Standards Division also conducts and maintains the hiring/testing process for departmental divisions with open positions. All new officers initially report to this division to obtain a brief departmental familiarization and while attending the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC) as necessary. Any full-time Law Enforcement Officer working for the Butler Co. Sheriffs Office must obtain certification through a stringent 14 week minimum KLETC Basic Training Class or already possess qualifying certification. This training curriculum is dictated by the state and covers a multitude of law-enforcement training topics. Open positions are typically posted on the county website, and may be published in local circulations or in online formats including HREPartners.com and the KPOA.org websites. Once received, applications are kept on file for one year for review with any open positions. Applicants selected to test for these positions will receive a letter of notice. There is no need to check the status of applications, only a notice provided if there is a change to mailing address.
